According to historians, Leonardo da Vinci was a true Renaissance man who had expertise in many fields. Unfortunately, people like Leonardo no longer exist. Instead, we live in a time when people do many activities but only excel at a few of them.
To begin with, teenagers are required to learn too many different fields at school to master all of them. Nowadays, virtually no students take only four or five subjects at school. Instead, they take many different subjects, so they learn just a little about each one. The students at my school take up to ten different classes, including Ethics and Home Economics. Because of this heavy load, it is impossible for us to become experts even in one subject. The teachers do their best to instruct us, but we still lack the opportunity to learn any one subject thoroughly.
Adults are also too busy dealing with many different things to become experts in all of them. Today, most adults are constantly being forced to multitask to the best of their abilities at work. For example, my father manages a company, so he is always busy dealing with many different areas, including accounting, sales, marketing, and even design. But he cannot know about all of them equally well because his specialty is accounting. So, he depends on other experts to gain the rest of knowledge he may need. Considering what he has to do at work, it is not surprising that he cannot become an expert in various areas at the same time.
Modern people are only able to master a few skills because they have to do many different things. Adolescents are often forced to learn too many different subjects at school, and adults lack the time to learn various skills at work. I doubt there will ever be anyone like Leonardo da Vinci again.
