Some people say that labor is a necessity for a person to be happy even if he is rich. I do not agree with them. Rather, I am convinced that people who do not work because they are rich can be quite happy.

For one thing, rich people can do whatever they want. Most people have to spend large portions of their lives working to pay for a house, clothes, and food. Many of them cannot pursue the hobbies or educational and leisure activities they want to because they have to work. This is not true of the rich. Instead, if there is something they want to do, they can do it. I recently read about a wealthy lawyer who quit working to bike around the country. He looked like a happy man, and he will never have to work another day in his life. He will be content doing what he wants to do.

Another advantage the wealthy have is that they have few worries. It may be true that money does not buy happiness, but it sure can help. Many people’s unhappiness is caused by a lack of money. They cannot buy certain things. They have to work more to pay the rent. They need a second job to pay for their children’s educations. Rich people lack these worries. Without problems like these, people’s lives would be happier. Some rich people in my neighborhood do not work but just stay home all day and regularly do some outdoor leisure activities. Their lives are neither busy nor exciting, but they seem to be quite happy since they lack the day-to-day worries most people have.

Many rich people are happy despite not having jobs to fill the hours in their days. They can follow their hearts’ desires, and they lack any worries that can be upsetting. It is their money, not labor, that contributes to their happiness.
