SAMPLE ESSAY

Today, there are many TV news channels, newspapers, and news websites. Yet they often distort the news events and information. This makes it difficult to determine which news sources I should and should not trust.

For one thing, news media often ignore or stress certain aspects of a story. This makes it hard to learn the complete truth about a news event. In fact, I have occasionally read about the same event in two newspapers yet have gotten two completely different stories. The reporters for each story highlighted different aspects of the event, so I could not learn exactly what happened. Moreover, even though I tried reading another source, it too gave me a different version. Since there are so many news sources available now, I just do not know whom to believe.

In addition, the Internet allows anyone with an opinion to write and post about the news these days. The problem is that many individuals are extremely unqualified to be providing the news. Journalists are supposed to be unbiased, but many people on the Internet post extremely biased news reports. If I am unfamiliar with a website’s slant, I might get news that is wrong or which omits important details. I remember that I once found a website that looked very professional. It had many news stories, and they seemed accurate. However, my friend warned me that I should not trust anything I read there. He claimed that the reporters on that website often avoided the truth and wrote the news according to how they wanted it to have happened, not how it really happened. I will have to be more careful in the future.

With so many news and information sources nowadays, it is difficult to know which sources to trust. News reports are often incomplete, and many people presenting news on the Internet are not trustworthy. It is sad that people cannot trust many news sources.
